Too much edible food ends up in landfills, rather than in our tummies. With a bit of time, we can plan, store and eat the food in our homes to reduce food waste and save some money.
Food waste is a big issue. Every year, a lot of t of food is wasted. It is a waste of money, and we can make a difference by making minor adjustments; we can reduce waste and save some cash!
Join us at the Hub on Wednesday, April 30th, from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. for Save Money, Waste Less, a workshop designed to help all of us limit our food waste while stretching our grocery budget.
All of our workshops are free, but please register in advance to secure your spot and ensure we have sufficient resources for everyone. Registration can be completed through this form.
Steps to Reduce Food Waste
Plan Your Meals
Browse through those online flyers to see what's on sale and see what you already have on hand to plan your meals. If you stick to the meals you planned, you will know what you have in the house and see what you need to buy. Your food will go further because you know what you have.
Store Food Properly
The last thing you want is to have your money lost to food that has gone bad. If you store your food correctly, it will last. For example, store apples in the fridge to prevent them from spoiling quickly, and keep bread in a cool, dry place.
Use it up
By using up older items before newer ones, you’ll reduce the chances of them expiring before you have a chance to use them. This technique helps reduce waste and save you money by ensuring you utilize what you already have.
Get Creative!
If you had potatoes for dinner last night, save them and other veggies for soups, stews, or stir-fries. Yesterday’s roast chicken can be used for sandwiches or salads. By thinking of ways to repurpose your leftovers, you can ensure that nothing goes to waste.
Understand Expiration Dates
Many people confuse “sell by,” “use by,” and “best before” dates, which can result in perfectly good food being discarded.
The Hub’s mission is to empower the Lakeview community by providing local, essential services that cultivate personal and collective growth. Our focus is on real solutions for real people, addressing their practical needs and nurturing their social and emotional well-being.
The Hub is about more than finding jobs—it’s about helping people thrive in all aspects of their lives. By providing employment support that allows individuals holistically connect with the labour market, we aim to meet people where they are, understand their challenges and work with them to build a stronger, more connected community.
At the heart of it, the Hub ensures that everyone in the Lakeview community can grow, succeed, and feel proud of who they are. Lakeview Hub envisions a thriving community where individuals are empowered to reach their full potential. We see a future where everyone has access to the support, resources, and opportunities they need to succeed—where connections are strengthened, challenges are met with resilience, and every person feels valued, respected, and proud to be part of something bigger. Together, we’re building a stronger, more vibrant Lakeview, where hope and possibility are within everyone’s reach.
